ABOUT THOMAS TURNER

Born in California and raised in Georgia, diverse landscapes and wildlife have profoundly shaped Thomas Turner’s artistic journey. Early inspiration drawn from travel, nature, animation, and illustrated books fueled his imagination and creative spirit, making art his way of transforming reality into something more meaningful.

Turner grew up playing sports but always felt a pull toward creativity in his private time. Instead of focusing on homework or taking notes in class, he often filled sketchbooks—or even his assignments—with doodles. A pivotal moment in high school ignited his passion for surrealism when he discovered the works of Salvador Dali, Greg “Craola” Simkins, and Alex Pardee. This revelation cemented his decision to pursue art over all else.

Driven by a love for nature and exploration, Turner began studying painting at Appalachian State University in the Appalachian Mountains but left after two years to explore new opportunities. Drawn to the vibrant art and music scene in Athens, Georgia, he spent time freelancing there before moving to Denver, Colorado, where the rugged landscapes further shaped his creativity. In 2010, he returned to school, enrolling at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He graduated in 2012 with a BFA in Illustration, launching his career in bold and unexpected directions.

In 2014, Turner interned at ABV (A Better View) Gallery & Agency in Atlanta under acclaimed artist and ABV founder Greg Mike. This experience introduced him to the expansive world of fine art and murals, unlocking new creative horizons. At ABV, Turner connected with world-renowned artist James Bullough, leading to a transformative apprenticeship in 2018. Global travels and large-scale mural projects soon followed, solidifying his presence in the art scene.

Now firmly established in his career, Turner blends nature and folklore to explore the interconnectedness between humans, flora, and fauna. Often constructed from organic forms, his work envisions a world with a lighter human footprint, inviting viewers into immersive, dreamlike experiences. Featured in galleries and cityscapes worldwide, Turner’s art continues to evolve, inspiring deeper connections to the natural world.

Giant Hummingbird Takes Over Busy Buckhead Intersection (Click for article)

I caught a glimpse of Atlanta-based artist Thomas Turner as he was painting an enormous hummingbird on the wall of the Modera Prominence at the corner of Piedmont Road and Lenox Rd. He had a small photograph for reference, and he was using spray paint to add feather details to the head of the massive bird. I was blown away by the realistic feathers he was able to create with a can of spray paint.
